What is a tshechu?
Held in honour of Guru Rinpoche, tshechus feature cham — sacred mask dances performed by monks in extraordinary costume, each telling a story of protection and merit.
When they happen
Festivals take place through the year across different dzongs, with a concentration in spring and autumn. The famous Paro and Thimphu tshechus draw large, joyful crowds; smaller valley festivals offer a more intimate feel.
