Visa & Sustainable Development Fee

Every visitor needs a visa, which we arrange for you as part of your journey — you simply provide your passport details.

Bhutan also asks each visitor for a nightly Sustainable Development Fee that funds free healthcare, education and conservation — part of the kingdom's "High Value, Low Impact" philosophy. It is included in every BLT journey, and we confirm the current rate when we quote.

Current SDF rate confirmed at time of quotation.

Getting there & flights

You fly into Paro International Airport on Drukair or Bhutan Airlines, with connections from Delhi, Kathmandu, Bangkok, Singapore and other regional hubs.

The descent between the Himalayan ridges into Paro is one of the world's most spectacular landings. We coordinate your flights and private airport transfers so arrival is seamless.

  • Connectivity — reliable Wi-Fi and mobile coverage in towns and lodges
  • Health — no vaccinations are required; travel insurance is recommended

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to visit Bhutan?+
The classic seasons are spring (February–May) and autumn (September–November). Autumn brings the clearest skies and major festivals; spring adds blossom and warmer days; winter is cold, quiet and clear — and the season of the black-necked cranes in Phobjikha.
Do I need a visa, and what is the Sustainable Development Fee?+
Yes — all visitors need a visa, which we arrange for you. Bhutan also charges a nightly Sustainable Development Fee that funds free healthcare, education and conservation; it is included in every BLT journey, and we confirm the current rate when we quote.
How do I get to Bhutan?+
You fly into Paro International Airport on Drukair or Bhutan Airlines, with connections from Delhi, Kathmandu, Bangkok, Singapore and other regional hubs. The approach between the Himalayan ridges is one of the world's most dramatic landings.
How fit do I need to be?+
Our journeys are easy-to-moderate and intentionally unhurried. The hike to the Tiger's Nest is the most active element and is optional and paced to you. Journeys can be tailored to any level of fitness.
Is Bhutan suitable for couples, families and first-time visitors?+
Very much so. Every BLT journey is private and tailor-made, which makes it ideal for couples, private families, first-time visitors and mature luxury travellers alike.
How far ahead should I book?+
We recommend three to six months ahead, especially for peak autumn and spring, festival dates and the finest lodges. We can sometimes arrange journeys at shorter notice — just ask.
What is included in a BLT journey?+
A private licensed guide and driver, private vehicle and transfers, accommodation, meals per the programme, monument and museum entrance fees, curated activities, the Sustainable Development Fee, permits, bottled water and government taxes.
Can the journey be tailored?+
Always. Every BLT journey is personally tailored — extend or upgrade it, add trekking, wellness, festivals or photography, or combine Bhutan with Nepal, Sikkim or Northeast India.
